Antique plane goes down in Hood River, killing 2

JENNIFER: THANKS. LET’S GO TO THE GORGE NOW. TWO PEOPLE ARE DEAD FOLLOWING A SMALL PLANE CRASH DURING A POPULAR AIRSHOW IN HOOD RIVER. JEFF: THE FAA IS INVESTIGATING THE CRASH WHICH HAPPENED AT AROUND 10 AM THIS MORNING. OUR JENNIFER DOWLING IS LIVE AT THE HOOD RIVER AIRPORT WHERE THE INVESTIGATION IS UNDERWAY NOW. WE SAW THE FAA OFFICIALS HAULING WRECKAGE INTO THE GARAGE BEHIND ME. IN THE GRASS, THERE IS SOME DISTURBED EARTH WHERE THE PLANE HITS. THOSE WHO HAVE COME TO THIS AIRSHOW TODAY TELL ME IT IS A SAD KICKOFF TO WHAT’S TYPICALLY A REALLY FUN WEEKEND IN HOOD RIVER. IT’S VERY UNFORTUNATE TO SEE THAT HAPPEN. IT WAS A TRAGIC DAY FOR THOSE ARRIVING FOR THIS WEEKEND’S HOOD RIVER FLY IN. SOME WATCHED IN HORROR AS TWO OF THEIR OWN PLUNGED TO THE GROUND IN THIS NOW MANGLED AIRCRAFT RIGHT AFTER TAKEOFF. THERE’S A LOT OF PEOPLE HERE AND THIS IS A PRETTY TIGHT KNIT COMMUNITY AND SO THIS IS A PRETTY TRAGIC TIME FOR THEM. DEPUTY JOEL IVES SAYS THIS AIRPLANE ALSO KNOWN AS A SUPER CUB LIKELY DID A FIELD TAKE OFF FROM THE GRASS. WITNESSES REPORTED HEARING SPUTTERING THEN THE PLANE TURNED 90 TO 100 DEGREES AND DID A NOSE DIVE. MAYBE ABOUT 100 FEET OR SO OFF THE GROUND, THE PLANE STARTED TO SPUTTER A LITTLE BIT AND IT JUST NOSED TO TEH RIGHT, AND CAME IN AT A REALLY STEEP ANGLE. IVES SAYS 56-YEAR-OLD MATTHEW TITUS OF TURLOCK CALIFORNIA AND 55 EYAR OLD BEN DAVIDSON OF HOOD RIVER DIED AT THE SCENE. THE FAA ISSUED A BRIEF STATEMENT SAYING IT WAS A PIPER PA 18 AIRCRAFT THAT CRASHED JUST AFTER DEPARTURE FROM RUNWAY 25 UNDER UNKNOWN CIRCUMSTANCES. THAT’S A PIPER CUB, THEY FLY SLOW AND LAND SLOW, A VERY POPULAR AIRPLANE NOWADAYS, THEY ARE FROM THE 40’S. THE FLY IN IS ORGANIZED BY WAAAM, THE WESTERN ANTIQUE AEROPLANE AND AUTOMOBILE MUSEUM. IT CALLS ITSELF A LIVING MUSEUM CONTAINING WORKING ANTIQUE PLANES THAT CAN BE FLOWN. DEPUTY IVES SAYS THAT THE PLANE WAS POTENTIALLY ASSOCIATED WITH WE’RE STILL WATING TO LEARN MORE THE MUSEUM. FROM WAAAM SYMPATHIES WITH THE FAMILY, IT’S A TERRIBLE WAY TO START A WONDERFUL EVENT BUT ACCIDENTS HAPPEN IN AIRPLANES JUST AS THEY DO IN AUTOMOBILES. I PUT IN A CALL TO WAAAM AND LEFT A MESSAGE BUT DIDN’T HEAR BACK AS OF NEWSTIME TONIGHT. BECAUSE THAT CRASH HAPPENED IN THIS FIELD, IT DID NOT IMPACT THE TWO MAIN RUNWAYS WERE NOT — SO PEOPLE ARE CONTINUING TO FLY IN AND OUT. BACK TO YOU. JENNIFER: JENNIFER DOWLING REPORTING LIVE FOR US. WE WILL CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THIS
