Can an EMERALD Lose Color? | Emerald Enhancement

(bright music) – This is Jill Maurer
with your Jewelry Minute, and today I’m answering the question, can an emerald fade over time? The answer is sadly, yes. It can fade in color over time. It isn’t that the natural
color of the emerald is changing over time,
it’s that we usually enhance an emerald’s color by heating it. And with an emerald in
particular by heating it in oil. Over time, the oil can
leach out, and it just fades and loses its color. So you see this a lot,
especially with estate jewelry, and with antique jewelry that
an emerald is pretty light and you wonder, hmm,
can I make this darker? Or if your mother or grandmother
is describing her ring as being much lighter than it
used to be, it probably is. So the next question
is can it be restored? And again, the answer is, yes. Normally it can be restored. It can be just gently
heated in that oil again. I wouldn’t recommend doing this yourself, because the stone, usually
it’s taken out of the piece to do that, but any
jeweler, almost any jeweler can do that for you. This has been your Jewelry Minute. If you have a jewelry
related question for me, just ask me in the comments below. Until next time! (bright music)

  1. I don’t have any knowledge about the stones except diamond, so it is good to know those features about all different stones. Thank You so much for sharing❤️

  2. Another important piece of information from the expert… I love it! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us! xoxo!

  3. Interesting. I have a question…you know those little jewelry cleaners that work by submerging your jewels in a liquid solution and vibrating? What is your opinion on those? Do they work? Pros? Cons? What exactly are they supposed to do? Loosen bits of dirt? Polish? Anything else? I was given one a few years back and never use it. I'm wondering if there's a good reason to keep it or if I should send it to Goodwill.

  4. Interesting!! How are you not running out of ideas??!! I struggle to get out one video per week! ha My birthstone is emerald, I don't own one but I always wanted one. Autumn raised a good question, I am curious as well. Thanks Jill!
