Why do Design Periods Overlap? | Antique Jewelry

(bright upbeat music) – This is Jill Maurer
with Your Jewelry Minute, and today I’m answering the question, “Why do jewelry periods overlap?” And jewelry periods can sometimes be named for the royalty who was
reigning at the time. So, a king or a queen, and that would be Georgian,
Victorian, Edwardian, that type of name. Or, they can be named
for a style of jewelry that occurred in a
specific period of time. That would be Art Nouveau or Art Deco. And this is why the time
periods can sometimes overlap. Let’s take Art Nouveau, for example. Art Nouveau spans from 1890 to 1940. So, it does go between the
end of the Victorian period and through the Edwardian period. So it overlaps those two periods. But, it was a very distinct style that was made just during that time. And when you look at
enough Art Nouveau jewelry, you can identify it. It is known by, for it’s flowing lines, and its natural elements. It’s very naturalist
type of style of jewelry. But, other jewelry was being
made during this period. So, we call it Art Nouveau if
it was made during that time and it is of that style. Another example is retro
jewelry and mid century jewelry. Both of these overlapped quite a bit. But, retro jewelry was
inspired by World War II. And it has elements of World War II. Like bracelets can be formed
like the tire tracks of a tank. It is also known to have big,
strong, central gemstones, and then ribbons behind them. It is a very distinct look
that was influenced by World War II and by starlets of the day. During the same time, there was a different movement in jewelry that was inspired by modernism and our fascination with space travel. And mid century pieces of jewelry will use some of those elements. They’ll have starbursts,
or they’ll have a Sputnik, or a space station, kind of look to them. They can be very abstract. So while both happened
during the same time frames, they’re considered different
periods of jewelry. So, that is why jewelry
periods can overlap. If you have a jewelry question for me, just ask me in the comments below. Until next time. (bright upbeat music)

  1. Goooood Morning Jill – If a person started collecting a certain period of jewelry, is there a way to know or identify a replica? (Somewhat like the handbag authentication process?)
