YouTube Stories | Macinley Butson: Inventing Armour to Battle Radiation

I’ve been inventing pretty much since
age seven living in an information age you know especially my generation we’ve
been able to grow up with the world at our fingertips with YouTube we have this
information but what do we do with it I never thought that any of these
projects would go beyond my backyard but I realized that there was actually the
potential for this device to be out there helping people saving lives even as a young girl I remember she
loved always asking questions mom how does this work mom how does that work
constantly annoying my parents with like why is the sky blue why why why
this is my first invention kind of the start of my journey from all of my
projects smart armor I see it having the most potential to help people smart
armor stands for scale mail armor for radiation therapy it started off as a
conversation over the dinner table now often come home at the end of the
day and talk a little bit about problems that we’ve had one issue we had is when
we were actually treating breast cancer patients they would fire a single beam
but instead of it going straight down it branches out like a tree so the
contralateral breast which is what’s not being treated can receive excess dose
which has the potential to cause cancer forming later in their lifetime one of
our family passed away from cancer not very long ago so it wasn’t just
statistics on a page anymore it was it was personal I decided in that moment I
was going to do something to help one of my favorite quotes was if not me then
who and if not now then when I was trying to read scientific journals and
understand therapy but for someone who is you know and you tend trying to learn
things that people’s in a master’s degree would be learning could have been
reading it in French that’s when I turned to YouTube I was looking at
videos as to how to actually read scientific journals and then looking at
the characteristics of radiation therapy what’s involved in treatment finding
what I need to solve this from there I began my testing testing different
shielding medals so I tested led aluminium and copper
LEED is the standard shield that’s used for radiation around the world so LED
should be the best I got my results and was like ok this is a bit strange I was
convinced that I kind of done something wrong I went back and did them again
multiple times and kept coming up with very very similar numbers that kind of
contradicted what is currently said about LED that was one of the biggest
discoveries that copper was 20% more effective than LED at the skin surface I was in history class kind of popped one
day I was like far we were looking at ancient armies and looking at scale mail
it was able to fit around people’s bodies with YouTube I basically looked
up how to make scale mail tutorial eventually ending up with what’s now
known as the smart armor a hospital in Sydney I was able to actually set it up
as a treatment would be set up and found that it was able to reduce up to 80
percent of the dose that was previously there that was a point that I realized
that I wasn’t just in my garage doing my own little science experiments there was
actually the potential for this device to be out there helping people across
the world it’s been a bit of a journey anyone can find simple solutions to
global problems the answers are out there thank you so if star was one so that’s the
equation for force in case yep I’m a very proud nerd I don’t think there’s
anything wrong with that I think everyone has a calling to help other
people whether that be through art through music through history I can do
that through science the biggest problem that I’d love to solve of course will
probably be cancer we’re still a little bit off that but hopefully sometime soon you

  1. I want to marry this mind. I have an idea for modern armor and would love to speak to you and your team about it.

  2. Wouldn't it be nice if youtube had it's own education tab? That would be nice for students and teachers 😛

  3. Anybody else not subbed but seen it in their feed? How sway? & who else subscribed after finding it?😂😂😂

  4. Would love to get one if wider than just specifically in the medical realm, hoping its effective on a survival scenario, like if another Fukushima occurs

  5. This is amazing, she’s brilliant! It’s really wonderful to know that inventive minds are still thriving in the modern generation. So many women will benefit from her genius

  6. "She is still learning on YouTube" Ehm… she only used it to find out how to read scientific reports, so I think she doesn't need YouTube for most of the stuff now.

  7. If you guys aren't interested in the video then don't watch it – the subject matter is actually really fascinating.

  8. Macinley Butson, that’s unproved theory without medical research. Show us real data at least of 100 subjects

  9. Very well done. Your intelligence and accomplishments are beacons in a country that dislikes the intellectual and favours mediocrity. You are a joy👌👏👏👏👏👏👏

  10. Well, to be 100% honest, I learned more calculus in YouTube in last few hours than what I have been learning at school since grade 8 as I am preparing myself for my semester midterm exam on calculus at the university. Fair enough…. I had also self-studied my A levels in this very platform, thanks to the people who make free contents for all of us to study; such generosity! 🙂

Special thanks goes to channels like Khan Academy, The Organic Chemistry Tutor (more of maths than of being about chemistry, haha), NancyPi, edX, etc etc…

  11. Can you all stop talking about you tube and acknowledge this beautiful young woman and how brilliant she is for her success but most importantly, for caring. This is the sort of young woman we need for our future….thank you and well done.❤

  12. It's not really inventing if you can just internet search materials that resist radiation and you just stick them together to make clothing.
    That's more like just sewing…
    She is a clothes maker.
    Get real.
    Credit where it's due.
Stop with the girl power for the sake of it.

It makes the accomplishments of actual amazing women less respected.

  13. So many questions…First Copper is more effective against radiation than Lead?? What are the insights on this? Is pure copper used? is pure lead used for both the experiment and with patients undergoing radiation? Can there be a follow up of her findings and explanations and showing of results? I want to see! Lastly, since when did I subscribe to youtube?!?

  14. Wonderful young Australian woman doing great things from the heart with her mind and hands. 🇦🇺💖

  15. I clicked because I thought she was Valentina Nappi 🤦🏻‍♂️ But then I saw beauty with brains.

  17. I wonder if this could be useful for crews to wear, during any solar storms or CME’s, as crews journey to Mars.🖖🏻✨

  18. I fixed the power windows on my Ford Fairlane with the help of a YouTube video, but this is a whole other level.

  19. What's with all the stupid and perverted comments? This intelligent woman is inventing radiation deflecting armor that looks like dragon scales! I'd love to learn more about how her research is going.

  20. 3:51 Being picky, there is no equation on that t-shirt (i.e. there is no equals "=" sign). It would have been better to say: "That's the expression for force."

  21. You are all kinds of awesome. Thank you for using your powers for good! (Copper is lovely to work with, isn't it?)

  22. Hello YouTube
I've got a problem with dark mode on Android. Galaxy S7.
When typing a comment and selecting text to copy, a big black rectangle apperas behind the selected text options bar. It is in front of everything else. Really annoying. Please fix.
